The St. Gallen Abbey UNESCO World Heritage Site designation not only encompasses the world renowned Baroque hall in the abbey library and the imposing cathedral. It also includes the «miracles of our written heritage». Nowhere else in Europe can boast such a wealth of manuscripts and documents dating back to the early Middle Ages.

Three new exhibitions now introduce these unique treasures to a wider public, with particular emphasis on attracting children and families

By means of modern presentations, visitors are encouraged to view these «miracles of our written heritage», produced over 1400 years ago here in St. Gallen, in accordance with the new guidelines governing the UNESCO World Heritage itself: «To uphold values: timeless, unique, inspirational».

In addition, a new educational format and related programmes will be launched to run parallel to this re-opening. These will include longer guided tours, as well as new attractions for children, families and schools, such as the workshop «Sheep, ink blots and lumbago – writing in the Middle Ages». The shopping selection will also be extended, the staff will get new uniforms and a fresh website will be developed to deal with the tourism side of the Abbey complex.
